Spain Motorbike Road Trip: Barcelona — Lilynworld Skip to main content

Setting Off from Barcelona

Every great road trip begins with a first step — or in this case, a first twist of the throttle. Barcelona, with its Mediterranean energy and Gothic Quarter charm, is the perfect launchpad for an epic motorbike adventure through Spain. The city buzzes with life: narrow streets give way to wide boulevards, tapas bars spill onto pavements, and the sea glitters just beyond the port.

This is Day 1 of a multi-week motorbike journey that will take us from the Catalan coast deep into the Spanish heartland. We packed light — just what fits in the panniers — and set off with nothing but a loose route and a sense of adventure. The first few kilometres out of Barcelona are always the hardest, weaving through city traffic until the open road finally appears.

Route Highlights

  • Barcelona’s waterfront and Gothic Quarter as a starting point
  • The ride out through the Catalan countryside towards the interior
  • First taste of Spanish highway riding — wide open spaces and dry heat
  • Switching from city mode to road trip mode — that magical moment

Travel Tips

If you are planning a similar motorbike trip from Barcelona, start early to beat the morning traffic. The AP-7 motorway heading south has tolls, but the free N-340 coastal road is more scenic. Make sure your bike is serviced before a long trip — Spanish garages can be hard to find in rural areas. And carry plenty of water in summer, as temperatures in inland Spain regularly exceed 35°C.
