The Long Ride Home: Genoa Along the Riviera to Barcelona

The final day of the Italy Road Trip is the longest and most bittersweet. We leave Genoa early in the morning, riding west along the Ligurian coast as the sun rises over the Mediterranean. The Italian Riviera unfolds in a series of dramatic clifftop villages, hidden coves, and terraced hillsides covered in olive groves and lemon trees. We pass through Savona and Ventimiglia before crossing into France at Menton, where the Cote d’Azur picks up seamlessly from where the Italian Riviera left off.

The ride through the south of France is fast and direct — we follow the autoroute along the coast past Nice, Cannes, and Marseille before crossing into Spain at La Jonquera. The final stretch down the AP-7 through Catalonia is familiar territory now, and as the skyline of Barcelona appears on the horizon, there is a mix of relief and sadness. Five days, five Italian and Swiss cities, countless mountain passes, and thousands of kilometres of some of Europe’s finest roads. The bike goes back in the garage, the panniers get unpacked, and the memories of Locarno, Biella, Turin, and Genoa settle into something permanent.

Route Highlights

  • Riding the Italian Riviera at sunrise — clifftop villages and Mediterranean panoramas
  • Crossing from Italy through the French Riviera — Menton, Nice, and Cannes
  • The long coastal autoroute through Provence and Languedoc back to Spain
  • Arriving home in Barcelona — the satisfying end of an unforgettable Italian adventure

Travel Tips

The Genoa to Barcelona ride is roughly 1,000 kilometres and takes a full day if you push through. Consider breaking it into two days with an overnight stop on the French Riviera if you prefer a more relaxed pace. French autoroute tolls add up quickly — budget around 50 euros for the tolls between the Italian border and Spain. Fuel up before crossing into France, as petrol prices are significantly higher there. The coastal road through the Italian Riviera between Genoa and Ventimiglia is spectacular but slow — take the autostrada if time is tight, or the coast road if you want one last memorable ride.
