The Jewel of Aragón: Forcall to Albarracín

Today’s ride takes us from the quiet village of Forcall westward into the province of Teruel. The destination is Albarracín, widely considered one of the most beautiful villages in all of Spain. Perched on a rocky promontory above the Guadalaviar River, its pink-hued sandstone buildings and medieval walls have barely changed in centuries.

The road from Forcall to Albarracín winds through the Sierra de Gúdar and the high plateau of Teruel. This is empty Spain at its finest — vast open landscapes, fields of lavender and wheat, tiny hamlets where the only movement comes from storks nesting on church towers. The elevation keeps temperatures comfortable even in summer, a welcome break from the heat of the lowlands.

Route Highlights

  • Albarracín — one of Spain’s most stunning medieval villages
  • Riding through the high plateau of Teruel at over 1,000 metres
  • The pink sandstone walls and hanging houses of Albarracín
  • Remote roads through the Sierra de Gúdar mountain range

Travel Tips

Albarracín is a popular day-trip destination, so the village can get crowded midday. Arrive early or stay overnight to experience it at its most magical — early morning and sunset are extraordinary. Parking outside the old town is free. The guided walking tour is excellent and covers the history of this unique place. Nights can be cool at this altitude even in summer, so bring a layer.
