Discovering the Rainbow Nation by Road

South Africa is a country that overwhelms you with its scale, its beauty, and its complexity. Our road trip took us along the legendary Garden Route and beyond, from the cosmopolitan streets of Cape Town to the wild coastlines of the Eastern Cape. Driving in South Africa is an experience in itself — the roads are well maintained, the distances are vast, and around every bend there is a view that makes you want to stop and stare. We started in Cape Town with Table Mountain rising dramatically behind the city, its flat summit cloaked in its famous tablecloth of cloud. The V&A Waterfront, the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood, and the sobering history of Robben Island set the tone for a journey through a nation of extraordinary contrasts.

The Garden Route itself is one of the world’s great drives — a stretch of coastline where lush indigenous forest meets dramatic cliffs and pristine beaches. We stopped in Hermanus to watch southern right whales breaching just offshore, explored the ancient Tsitsikamma forest with its towering yellowwood trees, and crossed the famous Bloukrans Bridge — home to the world’s highest commercial bungee jump. The wildlife encounters were unforgettable, from penguins waddling on Boulders Beach to elephants roaming at Addo Elephant Park. South Africa’s diversity extends far beyond its landscapes — the food, the wine from Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, the cultures, and the warmth of the people make it a destination that stays with you long after you leave.

Travel Tips

December is peak summer in South Africa and an excellent time to visit, with long warm days perfect for road tripping. Book rental cars and accommodation well in advance for the Garden Route during the holiday season. Drive on the left side of the road and be cautious at night — wildlife on rural roads is a real hazard. The Garden Route can be done in a week, but two weeks allows for a more relaxed pace with time for detours. Do not miss the wine regions near Cape Town — Stellenbosch and Franschhoek offer tastings that rival anything in France or Italy. Always carry cash for smaller establishments and market vendors, though cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas.
