Chasing Better Weather to Cuenca
Rain on a motorbike trip is never ideal, and today the weather has other plans for us. Rather than waiting it out, we decide to push south towards Cuenca, hoping to outrun the clouds. As any experienced rider knows, weather in the Spanish mountains can change quickly — sunshine one moment, thunderstorm the next.
Cuenca is a UNESCO World Heritage city famous for its Casas Colgadas — the hanging houses that cling impossibly to the edge of a limestone gorge. The old town sits on a dramatic rocky spur between two river gorges, and approaching it by road is genuinely breathtaking. Despite the rain earlier, we arrive to clearing skies and golden afternoon light — perfect for exploring this architectural wonder.
Route Highlights
- Cuenca’s famous Casas Colgadas (Hanging Houses) — a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- The dramatic gorge setting of the old town
- Riding through changing weather across the Castilian plateau
- The Museum of Abstract Art inside the Hanging Houses themselves
Travel Tips
If riding a motorbike in Spain in summer, always carry rain gear — mountain storms appear without warning. Cuenca’s old town is entirely pedestrianised, so park at the bottom and walk up. The views from the Puente de San Pablo bridge across the gorge are spectacular. For food, try Cuenca’s famous morteruelo, a rich game meat pate that is a local speciality.
